With one in five Edmonton children living in poverty, many come to
school with little or no food in their stomachs. The Nutrition Snack
Program provides a nutritious mid-morning snack in 30 high-needs
schools in central, inner-city, and northeast Edmonton. More than a
million snacks are served each year at a cost of 15 cents per child per
day.
Over 6,000 children count on the food planned and prepared by well over a hundred volunteers. This strong volunteer component means that more than 90 per cent of the budget goes directly into purchasing food (which also is augmented by Edmonton's Food Bank). Volunteers plan menus, plus shopping for, preparing, and serving snacks. Each snack program develops its own flavour, depending on the neighbourhood's ethnic mix and relationships built with local producers and food retailers. The Nutrition Snack Program also teaches children about good nutrition and introduces them to a full range of foods-many of which they do not eat at home. Funding comes entirely from non-government grants, contributions, and donations from throughout the community. Benefits Teachers indicate that there is a positive influence on student behaviour, attendance, morale, concentration and learning ability. It has also enhanced the social climate at the schools and has improved eating habits. For more information, contact:
